Gut wrenching decision February 27, 2006

Filed under: Nonsense — Mindy Richmond @ 5:28 pm

I had to make a very tough decision this past weekend. I can’t share details, but let’s just say I had to hurt a friend in the hopes of protecting her. I just pray that she can understand that as much as it hurts her, my decision was truly in her best interest. I wonder if this is what parents go through when they have to discipline their children. This is not a discipline situation, but I guess it’s along those same lines – choosing truth over popularity. It’s a hard choice, let me tell you. But consider Proverbs 27:6: “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”

Always choose truth, no matter what.

Tax Season – Shameless Plug February 23, 2006

Filed under: Nonsense — Mindy Richmond @ 3:58 pm

Has anyone noticed my countdown to tax day yet? Remember: For every day that goes by, that’s one less you have to get those tax returns done! If you are really dreading doing your taxes, you might think about having someone prepare them for you. Perhaps someone with reasonable rates. Perhaps someone you know and trust. Perhaps ME :) Now is a great time to give me a call, because I’ve already taken care of the early birds and the procrastinators won’t be calling me for several weeks.

Just think how great it will feel to get it done and out of the way! That and knowing you have helped me to chip away at that stupid credit card and you will have given me more opportunities to use my brand new one-touch stapler (Yes, Dad, I finally broke down and bought one)!

Now come on, don’t be a procrastinator!

Coin rolling party, anyone? February 23, 2006

XM: Beastie Boys – “Intergalactic”
Mood: Gazelle intense

We started our Total Money Makeover on 11/7/03 and since then we have paid off all but one credit card and a student loan (we’ll work on the mortgage later). We have $1100 left to pay on that last credit card. Our payments towards debt are pretty sporadic, since Mike is 100% commission. We can go for months having to eat rice and beans, and then bam! he’ll have a great month or two and gets lots of spiffs and bonuses. This last time he had been saving all of his spiff checks in his desk so that we could make one large payment on the credit card. He likes to see big progress all at once I guess.

I do things a bit differently. I want to nickel and dime this last $1100 down to zero. So Tuesday night I had the brilliant idea to count the change in our 5-gallon water jug. I was up past midnight that night sorting the coins into baggies. I had planned to roll them on Wednesday night, but forgot to get wrappers from the bank. But I was so anxious to see how much we had that I stayed up late counting it anyway. We had $300 worth of coins in that water jug! So today I went to the bank to see if I could get coin wrappers. I told the teller my situation so she gave me a giant wad of coin wrappers and told me to rent a good movie, call a few friends, and have a coin wrapping party! I thought that was funny. It’s rare I come across a bank teller with a sense of humor. Sorry, but it’s true.

So anyway, tonight is the first free night I’ve had in awhile, and I’m going to spend it wrapping coins! I may even order a pizza. You are welcome to join me if you’d like. I promise I won’t make you wrap coins.

Dumping Debt February 21, 2006

Noise: Mike practicing darts
Mood: Inspired

Well, no one cut up their cards tonight, but I am still hopeful. I can sense that their mindsets are changing and tonight’s lesson on Dumping Debt really got them thinking. We have one woman in the class who has been extremely vocal about her use of credit cards and even after tonight she believes she is okay to continue using them. After all, she pays them off every month and earns hotel stays. I don’t know if she’ll ever come around on that issue, but she told the class today that she sold her truck. It was the only outstanding debt she had other than her mortgage. So she vowed to go home this week and start her debt snowball! She’s going to take that amount she was making car payments with and apply it to her mortgage payment. She no longer believes that she must always have a car payment. She is paying cash for her cars from now on! I am just so excited for her.

Several people have been telling me they know people who need this class or who want to go if it is offered again. I haven’t talked to the church about the possibility yet, but I hope to continue FPU at the church on an ongoing basis. I don’t get too jazzed about going to my job every day, but for two hours a week I am able to do work that I love, and for that I feel so blessed. I am praying that someday God allows me to do this full time.

I got so fired up at our finance committee meeting on Monday as we discussed our shared visions of a debt free church, a tithing church, and a church that no longer needs fundraisers because it will have plenty of cash in the budget to meet the needs of the community! I think this class is a huge part of reaching that vision and it’s great to know that others have the same dream that I do.

I want a laptop February 21, 2006

Filed under: Nonsense — Mindy Richmond @ 9:58 am

Pretty please, could I have a laptop? Oh, how I could use one for all this work I do on the computer (and no, I do not mean blogging). I could work on stuff on my lunch break, or before meetings when I get there super early because I have driven there straight from work because there is no sense in going home and then leaving again.

I don’t need bells and whistles. Just wireless internet capability and enough oomph to handle my financial programs (which I’m sure wouldn’t be much). If I thought I could get one super cheap I would devise a plan and save up for one. Purchasing retail is out of the question. It would have to be used, of course. Does anyone know how I could find one, cheap? Perhaps a two year old laptop that some techie has no use for because it’s “outdated,” but which would be perfect for me?

Heading to Hartford February 18, 2006

Filed under: Nonsense — Mindy Richmond @ 2:38 pm

Music: Over the Rhine – “If Nothing Else” (streaming from their website!)
Mood: Ready to go

I’m getting ready to leave for Hartford. I was hoping to leave by 3 so I would have time to get something to eat on the way and dilly-dally in Hartford (reminiscing) before making it to Becky’s by 6 pm. I’m just about packed so I will be close, but I have lots that I should have done prior to leaving. I’ll just have to do it all on Sunday night when I get back. I need to finish up some tax returns, finish typing the minutes from the last Chrysalis board meeting, and draft a fundraising policy for the church. The procrastination demon is back, apparently. A laptop would really come in handy about now.

I had a lovely time with the girls last night. I did bring out the video camera. I shot Eva talking and making funny faces, and Lila singing and telling a story. Then I played my Riverdance soundtrack and taped them dancing to it. Hilarious. They are actually very talented for having no professional training. And my goodness, Lila is such a great storyteller. She is so animated and she can remember so much! Next time you see her, ask her to tell you a story.

They woke up fighting over Lila’s blankie at 2 am. After I settled them down I went to take my contacts out (I had fallen asleep with them in). I discovered that my right contact was not in my eye where it was supposed to be, but only after clawing at my eyeball for a few minutes. Ouch. I have no idea when it fell out. The vision in my right eye isn’t that bad, so maybe I just didn’t need that contact.

The girls and I were up at 7:30 this morning and Mr. Mike didn’t get up until much later. But when he did, boy were they in for a treat. They love to play with Mr. Mike. He would reach for them and growl with his scary face and they would just giggle like crazy. He was pretending to steal their blankies so they went into another room to get a bigger blanket. When they came back in, Mike was hiding behind the bookshelf. He jumped out at Lila and scared her so bad that she slipped and landed on the hardwood floor with her chin. The poor thing was bleeding from the tooth and quickly developed a swollen lip. I think we may have accelerated that whole “lose your baby teeth” process. But she calmed down and certainly had no hard feelings towards Mike. He was apologizing while she cried and she actually stopped crying just to tell him, “It’s okay.” She’s bleeding from the mouth and she’s telling him it’s okay. And then there’s Eva. She just sat there and consoled her sister… “You’ll be okay, Wiwa.” I wonder if Chey will ever let them come over again. It’s dangerous at the Richmond house!

Anyhoo, it’s on to Hartford for me!
