The Weekend May 30, 2006

Mood: Funkish

I had a perfectly full and wonderful weekend.

Friday night I babysat for Poet. He slept, he ate, he filled his pants. It was great. Until he started crying. Forty-five minutes is all, but not being familiar with his brand of crying I was beginning to get a little concerned. When Michelle dropped him off she forgot to mention that he likes to pretend like he’s dying by holding his breath. He didn’t stop until Mom and Dad arrived.

Saturday I picked up Chey and the girls and we spent some time with Michelle’s family. Her brother and sister-in-law and their kids were visiting from Pittsburgh. Let me just say that I love this entire family. When I first moved to Lansing they took me in as one of their own so they are sort of a surrogate family to me. I’m sure I am not the only one to feel this way. Their gifts of hospitality are far reaching.

Saturday night I went on a date. Mike took me to a Tigers game. I am not a sports fan, but I love baseball games. The sounds, the smells, the fans, it’s all terrific. In the real world I would never pay $3.25 for a single hot dog, but something about the atmosphere of a baseball game makes it okay. It was a great game. The Tigers won and they put on a great fireworks show afterwards. Mike loves fireworks. They bring out his inner child. I love it. We finished off the night by stopping for ice cream on the way back home. Good times.

Sunday Mike and Chey and I headed down to Hartford to hang with the Unrath’s. Aside from the heat we had a great time. Great food, fireworks, a late night movie, sleeping in, card games, baby time with my niece. More good times. I have pictures but my USB cable is chewed so they’ll be stuck in my camera until I can get a replacement.

This upcoming week should be just as full. Tracy is in town and the kids’ grief camp is this weekend!

The Company Golf Outing May 26, 2006

XM: Robinella – “Break It Down Baby”
Mood: Pooped

Wednesday was our company’s 10th Annual Golf Outing. It’s not a very big deal really. Fairly small in comparison to most. But it’s the first golf outing I’ve ever attended and also the first I’ve ever been in charge of. Several of us from the office worked together to put it together, but on the big day I was the one who had to run the show. I’ll say I had a lot more fun than I expected. Everyone was very kind, and I think they all had a good time too.

I love the people I work with, I love the work, and it pays well enough. This job has challenges and ups and downs, but that’s what keeps me interested. As long as I’m doing something else I love in my free time, I think this will work as a long term arrangement. Remind me that I said that the next time I get pissy and start whining about my job, will you? Because we all have our bad days, and when we do it’s hard to remember the good ones. And my good days far outweigh my bad days, but it never feels like that on the bad days. Know what I mean?

Well, that’s one item checked off the Blogging To Do List!

On a completely unrelated note, I’ve been experiencing numbness in my left hand for a week or two. It comes and goes. Just a few days ago I started experiencing a surging vibration through my left leg. It starts in the foot and moves upward. I think if I were having a stroke I would have figured it out by now. I think it must be a pinched nerve somewhere. I think I need a chiropractor.

Ahh, here’s another to cross off the List:

The Princess Bride – The Truth May 25, 2006

Filed under: Books, Movies — Mindy Richmond @ 6:58 pm

I’m reading The Princess Bride again. Yes, it’s a book and a movie. It was a book first in 1973, then William Goldman wrote the screenplay which was eventually made into the movie in 1987. If you enjoyed the movie, read the book. You’ll love it. But I must warn you that William Goldman is a big fat liar. In the intro to the book Goldman states that S. Morgenstern wrote the book and he just abridged it by keeping “the good parts.” Kari discovered the truth the hard way after scouring several bookstores in the Portland, Oregon area and then shared the news with me after I was half-way through the book. The truth is, there is no unabridged version, and there is no S. Morgenstern. We both felt a bit violated, betrayed. But I must admit it’s a very clever joke, and I can almost laugh at it now. Despite the lies, I find myself wanting to read the book because it’s such a great story. It does makes me curious about this Goldman fellow, so I googled him.

“Simon Morgenstern is a pseudonym, a narrative device invented by him to add another layer to The Princess Bride. Goldman claims S. Morgenstern is the original Florinese author of The Princess Bride and credits himself merely as an abridger who is bringing the classic to an American audience. Goldman also wrote The Silent Gondoliers under Morgenstern’s name.”

I’d like to check out that book, The Silent Gondoliers. Read the rest of the article, namely the list of screenplays he has written. I found it interesting.

St. Greg’s May 25, 2006

XM: Sarah McLachlan – “Sweet Surrender”
Mood: Weary

I searched the thesaurus for some interesting mood descriptions but weary still fits best. Runner-ups were: mirthless, lachrymose and saturnine. I’m blaming the mood on hormones and patiently waiting for it to pass. (I’m reminded of the words of Vada Sultenfuss in My Girl: “Go away! And don’t come back for five to seven days!”)

Anyhoo,

Here is the hurried recap of our trip to St. Gregory’s:

(Subject to revision in case you can’t follow my disjointed thought pattern… I wrote it Monday on the way back home.)

Did a good deal of soul searching. Monday after Mass with coffee and monks was so nice. Brothers Martin & Cuthbert showed us a catalog of paper models of churches. Brother Cuthbert is almost finished with the Colonge Cathedral. He loves cookies and ice cream. Father William was in Goshen, IN but came back Saturday, so we had a chance to visit. Brother Martin seems to like the cats. The monks sing the Lord’s Prayer in harmony at Vespers. Beautiful. Went to Matins/Lauds at 5:30 am Sunday. LONG service. Went back to bed and missed Mass. I brought a million bags. We watched Davinci Code at the Three Rivers 6 on Saturday night. Ate at Piasiano’s Ristorante. Ursula was our waitress. We threw grapes off the balcony. We drank sweet tea and ate gourmet sandwiches. We went out on the boat with Brett after dinner. Scary. Important lesson learned: plug the bunghole. Climbed the hill twice. Very steep. Very tired. Legs hurt. Did not solve the Clue puzzle mystery. Met Buster Lite. Saw deer. (Chey, did I miss anything?)

That was it in a nutshell. Now to add coherency to some of those random details.

“Met Buster Lite.” The monks have three new cats at the abbey. All wandered in on their own and decided to stay once they found food and friendship. One of the newcomers is a black persian named Booger. This cat has several nicknames, and we were happy to give him another. Booger is identical to my Buster Brown, with two exceptions: Booger has the correct number of toes and he is more than a tad smaller than Buster. So we call him Buster Lite.

“Ursula was our waitress.” Seriously. After we were seated, she nearly walked right past our table and then came up to us acting a little confused. It was as if she didn’t understand why we were sitting there. But as soon as she figured it out, she asked if we wanted anything to drink. I said “just a water” and she started to walk away. Either she didn’t notice that Chey was sitting there or she assumed that I spoke for both of us. It just got weirder from there. As we were waiting for our food to arrive she came up to our table and asked what she could get us. (Our food, perhaps?) We stared at her, confused. Lightbulb flickering… yes! She got it. “Oh, I already took your order, didn’t I?” Wow. This was definitely Mad About You material. You remember Ursula, the waitress, don’t you? First on Mad About You and then on Friends as Phoebe’s twin sister. I didn’t think people like that actually existed.

“Did a good deal of soul searching.” I finished reading “Cure for the Common Life” by Max Lucado. There is an exercise at the end to aid you in discovering your ultimate passion and calling in life. The exercise is built around the acronym S.T.O.R.Y.
S trengths – how you get things done using your gifts
T opics – what you want to work with
O ptimal conditions – the environments where you work best
R elationships – the role & relationship to others you seek in tasks
Y es! – when you receive joyous affirmation

Here is the summary I ended up with (please don’t laugh and/or say I told you so… what seems obvious to others is never to us):

The themes in my S.T.O.R.Y. show that God has put me together so that I love to play with, talk to and teach children. I particularly like to do that with kids with special needs. I work best in optimal conditions that include an educational setting or a relaxed setting which leaves room for conversation and play. I am at my best when I’m in the role of mentor, guide, or friend. All these themes of my S.T.O.R.Y. work together so that I can empower children to become more confident and reach their full potential.

That’s all I’ve got for now. I took some pictures of the guesthouse so I’ll try to post those soon. I know this is kind of a lame report, but I’m just not in the writing mood (See above. Mirthless and lachrymose do not make for good blogging.) We’ll see if the fog lifts soon.

The long awaited day of retreat May 19, 2006

Rhapsody: Paul Simon – “How Can You Live In the Northeast”
Mood: Ready to go!

Tonight Chey and I leave for our “2nd Annual Trip to St. Gregory’s” (unless you can come up with a better name…). We had such a great time last year that we vowed to make it an annual tradition. Actually, I wish I would make time to go more often. Aside from it being a great way to retreat, refocus, and reprioritize, the monks are wonderful people and the more I visit the more they become like old friends to me. Mike asked me last night… “Except for the fact that they live in a monastery, these guys are pretty normal then?” Pretty much. They are just normal people fulfilling an extraordinary calling.

We will be there until Monday, so I won’t be reachable until then. I’ll have my phone with me but I plan to leave it in the truck and check it periodically.

Oh, and Dad, they would love to see you again. Each time I’m there they comment on how long it’s been and are always eager to hear how you are doing.

Life is Sweet May 17, 2006

Rhapsody: Grits – “Sippin’ Some Tea”
Mood: Sweet

I’m not currently sipping sweet tea, as it’s Coffee Time now, but I am reminiscing about the sweet tea I sipped last weekend with our good friends, Shawn and Monica. Mike and I and a friend traveled down to Southern Illinois (aka South Illy, So Ill, etc.) On Saturday the boys golfed while Monica and I took a trip to the salon. She showed me the high school where she works (which was surprisingly exciting for me… I have always loved school) and then we vegged around the house most of the remainder of the day. On Sunday we visited their church and had brunch with Monica’s family. The whole weekend was like a mini-vacation for us. Very laid back, very relaxing, and Shawn and Monica have a gift for making people feel at home. We love them lots. We are sad that they moved so far away, but I wouldn’t wish it any different because they are so happy there.

The pastor’s sermon on Sunday sparked some thoughts for me. He was talking about temptation and how important it is to walk away from it. Don’t go places where you are tempted, don’t hang with people who tempt you, etc. The word he used was abandon. That word set my mind on a tangent. I starting thinking about when we come to Christ and the changes we make as a result. Often the changing includes abandoning old interests and passions. But how often do we counter that by embracing new interests and passions? Do you think that sometimes in becoming Christians we mistakenly lose our individuality and forget who we are? Or maybe we haven’t forgotten who we are so much as we are afraid to be ourselves (because what kind of sin could that lead to? Ack!). It’s safer to become that white-canvas-shoe, cookie-cutter Christian, but it sure sucks the life out of you eventually. Didn’t Christ die to give us life? And didn’t God make each of us a unique individual? God has been working with me lately on rediscovering my deep-down passions and embracing my individuality. Finding out what he created me for. Realizing that when he made me he broke the mold :) After 20 years of “abandoning” I think I’m ready to do some “embracing.” Life is becoming sweeter every day.

The long awaited Charly has arrived!

Here are the stats:
Name: Charly Marie
Birthdate: May 11, 2006
Time of birth: 2:35 pm (couldn’t have waited 3 more minutes?)
Weight: 8 lb. 5.8 oz. (roughly)
Length: 21 in.

My first thought when I got to hold her was: I want to take her home with me. :)
My second thought: She has her momma’s nose. Hands down, no question!
And my third thought: She is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

Kari did such an outstanding job during the labor and delivery. She stayed calm and collected, and Mark was a terrific coach. Kari and Mark, I am so proud of both of you. Keep up that same teamwork with child-rearing and you will make amazing parents.

And now for the pictures!

The Whole Family

Nice booties!

Safe in the arms of her Aunt Dana

With our mom, the newly appointed “Grandma Ruthie”

And with her Aunt Mindy, who will always have gum!
